It just wouldn't be Winterfest without the chili cook-off! If you think you've got a killer recipe, enter and show it off. Chamber certificates will be awarded for 1st place: $100, 2nd place: $75, and 3rd place: $25. Registration begins at 6:30pm, judging at 7pm. Winners will be announced at approximately 7:30pm. You don't need to be present to win. Cook-off registration is $25. The judging criteria and operational procedures of the Chili Association Society International (CASI) have been used as guidelines for this cook-off.
Make sure to stop by Sunset Bar & Grill to taste the 2011 and 2012 Grand Prize Winner (same chili, same winner!). They will be "recreating" the chili both weekends of Winterfest!
Judging Criteria
Award-winning chili should look good, smell good and taste good! Accordingly, each cup of chili is to be judged on five (5) criteria to arrive at one whole number score from 0 to 10, with 10 being the highest and 0 the lowest. The 5 criteria are: AROMA - RED COLOR - CONSISTENCY - TASTE - AFTERTASTE
Judging Operations
You are welcome to stay for cook-off judging. Judging will start at 7pm. Your chili will be assessed by multiple judges from the same table. You will receive a combined score based on this information. The highest score from each table will proceed to the final round. Winners will be announced after final round scores have been tallied. You do not have to be present to win. All crock pots and related items must be picked up by 8:00pm.
A note on tiebreakers: In the event that chili from the same table ‘tie’ for first place during the first round, the chili that ‘tie’ will continue to the final round. If there is a ‘tie’ at the final round, a 'tiebreaking round' of judges will reassess the chili that tied.
Heating
There are outlets available to keep your chili warm until judging. If you brought a crock pot, you are welcome to keep chili warm until the registration deadline is announced.
Toppings
In CASI cook-offs, toppings are not allowed. For today’s purposes, you will not be disqualified if you use toppings; however, your score may be lowered if judges are unable to score you on ‘red color.’
Instructions
1) Fill your cup 3/4 of the way full. Place lid on cup.
2) Bring your cup to the collection table.
3) Keep your registration ticket!
